Tom Holland, the actor who plays Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has announced that he will be taking a year-long break from acting. This decision comes after producing and starring in the new Apple TV+ series, « The Crowded Room, » which explores the true stories of people who have struggled and learned to successfully live with mental illness. Holland plays the role of Danny Sullivan, a character based on Billy Mulligan, a man known as The Campus Rapist and the subject of a highly publicised court case in the late 1970s. The show was a tough experience for Holland, who said, « There did come a time when I was sort of, ‘I need to have a break’. »
In an interview with ExtraTV, Holland explained that he loved the learning curve of becoming a producer, but the show did break him. He disappeared for a week to Mexico to have some time on a beach and lay low. He said, « I’m now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was. » Holland has always lived by the idea that hard work is good work, but he needed a break after the challenging experience of producing and starring in « The Crowded Room. »
The first three episodes of « The Crowded Room » will start streaming on Apple TV+ starting June 9, and an episode will be released every Friday after that until July 28. Holland’s decision to take a break from acting is a reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health, and it’s essential to take a break when needed. Holland’s fans will undoubtedly miss him on the big screen, but his decision to prioritize his mental health is admirable.
