NEW ORLEANS — Batteling a three-alarm fire at Domino Sugar refinery in Arabi, St. Bernard Parish firefighters were able to bring the fire under control, parish officials told WWLTV.
Multiple reports of fire coming from the Domino Sugar refinery in Arabi came into the WWLTV newsroom around 4 p.m., and those reports were confirmed by St. Bernard Parish officials shortly after.
St. Bernard Parish President Guy McInnis had instructed residents who live near the refinery to shelter in place, but later said it was safe enough for residents to evacuate if they so chose.
McInnis told WWLTV’s Devin Bartolotta that the fire happened in a sugar silo at the refinery.
McInnis told WWLTV that there have been no reports of injuries. After an evacuation, refinery workers were counted to make sure no one was missing.
Heading back to Arabi from the Hurricane Command Center in Baton Rouge, St. Bernard Parish Fire Chief Thomas Stone told WWLTV he was on his way to help with the fire.
