Yes, but it’s titanium and it comes with matching 300 SL Hot Wheels on a machined titanium base.

Hot Wheels has teamed up with renowned Swiss watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen for a $ 10,000 set with a model car and to create a watch. The car is a 1:64 scale Hot Wheels model of IWC’s racing-ready Mercedes Gullwing SL from 1955 and the watch is an IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition. The first set – wristwatch and car model – is up for auction while you read this at the Bonhams event at the Goodwood Members Meeting, where the real IWC Gullwing SL drives. The current bid at the time of writing is £ 13,000 (approximately $ 17,800). But IWC and Hot Wheels will offer a total of 50 of the sets at a US price of US $ 10,000 each.

Florentine Ariosto Jones founded IWC Schaffhausen in Switzerland in 1868 and has since been known for several innovations in this field, including the Use of titanium and the manufacture of chronographs for British pilots during World War II. More recently, IWC has established a number of well-known collaborations with automobile manufacturers, including Porsche Design in the 1970s to 1990s and, from 2005, also with AMG Mercedes, whose sponsorship ranges from classic car races such as the gullwing to the Mercedes Formula 1 team. It is therefore a little surprising that the International Watch Company (IWC) is starting a new collaboration with … Hot Wheels.

Why should a historic brand like IWC Schaffhausen enter into such a collaboration? Was it for money? « No way, » said IWC CEO Christoph Grainger-Herr. “Hot Wheels has such a rich culture of being very creative when it comes to interpreting what’s current in auto culture at any point in time, from 1968 to today. In the beginning that would have been hot rods and muscle cars and pony cars, then it went into really every aspect of modern car culture from JDM to crazy Japanese tuners to European classics in the 300 SL. I think (Hot Wheels) really captures what the zeitgeist in terms of automotive design really is. «

» It was a chance meeting with Hot Wheels designer Manson Cheung that started our partnership, « said Grainger- Mr. “Our shared passion for automotive design and mechanical watches led to a meeting between the design teams of both brands at the Mattel Design Center in El Segundo, California. We immediately connected and spoke the same language of design, art and technology. I’m proud of our collaboration and the unique projects we’ve brought to life so far. ”

These unique projects include a Hot Wheels team transport set in 2020 that will carry the IWC Racing 300SL with its racing team transporter combined. Then an IWC-exclusive version of the Hot Wheels Mercedes-Benz 300SL that was recently launched. And now the watch and wheel set “IWC x Hot Wheels Racing Works”.

« This partnership reflects the creativity and shared spirit of our teams, and the result is an exceptional package that truly discerning luxury watch, racing and automotive enthusiasts will appreciate, » said Chris Down, Mattel’s chief design officer .

Yes, but 10 grand? Granted, you can buy any number of IWC watches for under $ 10,000, but you can also pay over $ 200,000. It also comes in a neat tool box with the car mounted on a machined titanium base.

« I think we need to look at it in the context of our presentation, » said Grainger-Herr. “This is a set that celebrates the return to the racetrack after the pandemic for the classic IWC racing team racing the 300 SL Gullwing. It’s basically Goodwood on the weekend. The time machine and the train machine come together. And that’s something that resonates with people who love mechanical watches and love the world of Hot Wheels, and there are quite a few of those. ”

Grainger-Herr said he was“ stunned ”when he saw the crowd on social -Media posts that he combined with watches with cars.

“Collecting has become an omnipresent thing, and it’s not just people who collect high-quality watches, jewelry, fine whiskeys and vintage cars. If you see that (an earlier) model like the Hot Wheels Mercedes-Benz 190, which is correct a few years ago, is already reselling on eBay for north of $ 2000 for a model of $ 30 two years ago , there is serious collection effort on scale models. You can see that many collectors who like real sports and classic cars also collect models. I don’t think they’re mutually exclusive. What we’re trying to do here is simply to tell a very nice story of how the design and engineering world of Hot Wheels comes together with our brand in a very specific context. And we’re celebrating that with the 50 sets (Hot Wheels model and IWC watch). ”

The auction for the first set ends on Wednesday. If you get outbid there, you can still buy one anywhere fine IWC watches are sold. Find yours here.
