The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said , a moderately strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale shook Batangas on Friday evening, August 13th.
The origin of the earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 was around 11:08 pm 18 kilometers (km) southwest pursued by Calatagan, Batangas. It was initially measured as a 5.7 magnitude earthquake. Phivolcs said it was « moderately strong » at intensity IV in Calatagan, Batangas; Puerto Galera and Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro; Lipa City, Lemery and Taal, Batangas; Biñan, Laguna; and Looc and Lubang, Occidental Mindoro.
Also, it was « weak » at Intensity III in Pasig City, Parañaque City; Manila City; Quezon City; Caloocan City; Mandaluyong City; Valencia City; Abra de Ilog, Oriental Mindoro; Obando, bulacan; Batangas City; and Tanza, Cavite.
It was recorded as a « slight shake » at Intensity II in Meycauayan City and Malolos City, Bulacan; Makati City; Pasay City; Pateros; and San Jose, San Pascual, Bauan, Agoncillo, San Luis and Talisay, while it was « barely noticeable » at Intensity I in Malabon City.
The main magnitude 6.6 quake that occurred on July 24th was caused by movement along the Manila Rift – an earthquake generator located off the coast west of the island of Luzon, roughly parallel to the Philippine archipelago to the north, but very close to land on the southern tip of Western Mindoro.
