CM – 6.5 magnitude earthquake shakes Taiwan, residents report severe tremors

A strong earthquake shook northeastern Taiwan on Sunday, with local residents reporting violent tremors in the capital Taipei.

A strong earthquake struck northeastern Taiwan on Sunday. Local residents reported violent tremors in the capital Taipei, but there were no immediate reports of widespread damage.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau said the quake was 6.5 magnitude, while the US Geological Survey had a lower magnitude of 6 , Stated 2.

It struck northeastern Yilan District at 1:11 p.m. (0511 GMT) at a depth of 67 kilometers (42 miles).

An AFP reporter living in Yilan said the tremor appeared to be to last about 30 seconds.

« The walls of the house were shaking, both sideways and up and down, it felt pretty strong, » the reporter said.

The main tremor was followed by a magnitude 5 aftershock, 4 and the Taipei MRT metro system was shut down for a little under an hour as a precautionary measure before operations resumed.

Tom Parker, a British illustrator who lives in Taipei, said he was on the subway when the quake struck.

« The first time I had a quake i felt in the MRI. Like a tame roller coaster, « he tweeted, adding that he and other commuters should take shelter at the station for the time being.

Taiwan is regularly hit by earthquakes because the island is close to the junction of two tectonic plates.

Some earthquakes of this magnitude can prove fatal, although much depends on where the quake hits and how deep it is.

Hualien, a scenic tourist hotspot, was hit by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in 2018 which killed 17 people and injured almost 300.

In September 1999, a magnitude 7.6 quake killed around 2,400 people in the deadliest natural disaster in the island’s history.

However, in December 2020 A 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Yilan, with no major damage or injuries reported.
