CM – A-League contingent rewarded with a Socceroos call

A-League players make up almost a third of the Socceroos squad for next month’s World Cup qualification against Kuwait, Chinese Taipei, Nepal and Jordan in Kuwait City.

Of the 31-man Socceroos have 10 A-League squads, including trio Ruon Tongyik (Central Coast Mariners), Denis Genreau (Macarthur FC) and Connor Metcalfe (Melbourne City).

Other players in the squad include midfielder Kenny Dougall Blackpool, Croatian-born right-back Fran Karacic from Brescia, midfielder Riley McGree from Birmingham City and goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas from SønderjyskE Fodbold.

Former Melbourne Victory glove maker Thomas, is one of four goalkeepers who along with Mat Ryan of Arsenal, Andrew Redmayne of Sydney FC and Danny Vukovic, who has not played club football since leaving Belgium in March, to return to Australia.

Rukavytsya, who is in Israel for Maccabi Haifa plays, has not represented Australia since 2018, while Holland’s most recent of its 15 Socceroos internationals took place in Austria seven years ago.
