CM – « Absurd, surreal »: Activists are panning the Iranian elections for the UN forum for women’s rights

Activists expressed surprise at the election of Iran as the United Nations’ main forum for women’s rights, apparently with the support of at least four Western democracies.

« This is surreal, » tweeted Iranian women’s rights activist Masih Alinejad on Wednesday after Iran joined the UN Commission on the Status of Women.

“A regime that treats women as second class citizens, arrests them for lack of a hijab prison, bans them from singing, bans them from stadiums. & does not allow her to travel abroad without her husband’s permission and is elected to the top women’s rights organization of the United Nations, « wrote Alinejad.

Hillel Neuer, executive director of the lobby group UN Watch, said: « It is absurd – and morally reprehensible. This is a black day for women’s rights and for all human rights.

« Choosing the Islamic Republic of Iran to protect women’s rights is like appointing an arsonist as city fire chief, » he said in a statement.

While praising the US for calling for a vote on membership in Iran, Neuer called on the Biden government to « condemn Ayatollah Khamenei’s obscene election as a women’s rights organization ».
Australian academic Kylie Moore-Gilbert, who was incarcerated in Iran for two years for being an Israeli spy and released late last year, tweeted a report from UN Watch about the nomination with a meme expressing confusion .

Iran was elected to the Commission during a secret ballot on Tuesday by members of the ECOCOC. Lebanon, China and Pakistan were also elected.

In a follow-up statement on Thursday, UN Watch highlighted that the voting results showed that at least four Western democracies supported it. There are 54 members of the United Nations Economic and Social Council that runs the commission, and of these 15 are Western democracies.

Iran’s accession was supported by 43 countries, which means that at least four Western democracies were UN Watch said.
