City guides said a lightning strike in the area caused the water system to fail on Saturday night.
They recommend not drinking, brushing teeth, or cooking with the tap water without boiling it first.
Free water boxes were distributed in the Barnesville Fire Hall on Sunday afternoon and will be returned to City Hall on Monday morning at 7:30 am.
