SYDNEY: Super Maxi LawConnect is the line honors favorite at the Sydney to Hobart yacht race starting Sunday, with the forecast of strong south winds on the first night potentially giving the other two 100 foot boats an advantage.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology predicts gusty winds for Sunday afternoon during take-off from Sydney Harbor, with the possibility of thunderstorm activity offshore.

« We love a hard south to start with because this is our best Conditions are and maybe give us the opportunity to get out a bit, « said LawConnect skipper and owner Christian Beck.

Last year’s race was canceled in the week before the start due to coronavirus-related quarantine issues, but the Edition 2021 continues with mass virus test protocols for the over 900 crew members of the 91 boats. There were two late withdrawals related to the tests.

The 628 nautical mile race (1,170 kilometers or approximately 720 miles) runs from Sydney along the south coast of New South Wales and across Bass Strait to Hobart, the capital of the island state of Tasmania.

In 2017, Comanche set the race record after finishing in 1 day, 9 hours, 15 minutes and 24 seconds, beating Perpetual Loyal’s record of 1 day, 13 hours, 31 Minutes and 20 seconds from last year.

Wild Oats XI has won nine line awards, the last time in 2018, and is the first boat to achieve the triple – race record, line award and overall winner. Comanche won the race again in 2019.

The boat had no opportunity to compete against super maxi rivals LawConnect and SHK Scallywag 100 in the first Australian maxi championship in early December after a crew member tested positive for COVID-19 . The boat broke its mast in April at the Brisbane-Gladstone race in Queensland.

Black Jack, who is representing the Yacht Club de Monaco in this year’s race, has sailed only five times with her new mast after the delivery from New Zealand was due of coronavirus-related bans in this country.

Without current race form, it is an unknown quantity, although the boat with the name Alfa Romeo won the line honor in 2009 and was third, second and fifth from 2017 to 2019.

One thing that benefits her is the experience of her crew, by the age of 13 they have sailed the race at least nine times.

“Our crew on paper is an excellent crew in my opinion, and that makes a great one Difference in protecting the facility and surviving severe conditions, ”said Skipper Mark Bradford. « There are several ways to run a sports team, one with the youth and one with experience. »

Bradford expects LawConnect to lead the fleet early and hopes that his boat will be in more favorable light air conditions for later in the race can be forecast, can make up ground.
