CM – Alex Cobb’s first season of Angels ends on a note, but he’s hoping to be back

ARLINGTON, Texas – Alex Cobb’s encouraging season ended disappointingly on Thursday afternoon.

Cobb got a five-run lead before throwing his first throw, but he gave up five runs in five innings and the Angels ended up losing 7-6 to the Texas Rangers.

Cobb didn’t accept the loss – emergency helper Jimmy Herget coughed up one run in the lead by allowing two runs in run eight – but it was nonetheless a rare bad game for a pitcher to rediscover this season.

« I had a lot of conversations with my wife, » said Cobb. “Let’s enjoy this year. It could be the last. «

Cobb, who turns 34 next week, joined the Angels after some tough years with the Baltimore Orioles. Expectations may have been low for many, but Cobb still managed to injure two people Bypass to get an ERA of 3.76.

« I would love to end it better today, but overall I’m happy with the way it went, » said Cobb.

Cobb had a successful season despite for a few moments saying he had walked off the hill and wondered if it would be his last time.

« It hits you and it really makes you understand whether you want to keep playing or not when you realize it could be over and you don’t like that feeling, » Cobb said. « You know that there is more in the tank. »

It remains to be seen whether the Angels will get more out of Cobb.

He becomes a free agent in November. Until then, the Angels have exclusive negotiating rights with him.

« There is mutual respect and a common desire to reunite next year, » said Cobb. « We haven’t had these conversations yet, but of course it’s something I would love to do. »

Cobb also said he had no doubt that the Angels Front Office was committed to victory, and he saw the other side in Baltimore.

« You are in win mode right now, » said Cobb. “As a player in the big leagues, you can only wish for a chance of victory in spring training. I’ve been on both sides. It’s no fun showing up when the front office and owners aren’t all-in, but it definitely seems like they’re here.  »

Another incentive for Cobb to return is the chance to continue playing with Shohei Ohtani. Cobb has spoken fervently all year long about how impressed he was with Ohtani’s ability to play at such a high level as a pitcher and hitter.

« I can’t paint a picture well enough for what it can do, » said Cobb. “He plays hard every day. He finished first to third, better than anyone else in the game. You’re proud to have him as a teammate because he shows up and plays hard. And he really wants to win, so you’d like to have this guy by your side.  »

Ohtani is actually ending his season strong on the record after breaking much of the second half.

Ohtani tripled in race one and drove in his 99th round of the season. He doubled up in the sixth and narrowly missed a game-defining homer in the ninth.

Ohtani now beats .311 (14 for 45) in his last 14 games, coming off a slump long enough to spark some discussion about whether he cost himself the MVP.

« He’s definitely gotten better since he’s been more willing to accept his walks, » said Maddon. “You see the ball go back to the left field. He’s better balanced. He is more centered and hits the middle of the field first.  »

Jared Walsh joined Ohtani in the All-Star Game in July and they had parallel slumps in the second half, but he also ends with a kick.

Walsh had three hits on Thursday. He’s now beating .340 (34 for 100) since Aug. 28, the result of a full field approach after becoming too heavy in August. All three of his hits on Thursday were to be abandoned.

Walsh and Ohtani helped the Angels get a first five run, but Cobb gave DJ Peters a triple homer in the third and a double homer in the fifth to Adolis Garcia.

« I honestly felt pretty good about things, » Cobb said. “The order was obviously pretty bad. Just throwing the team away after making two outs is something that needs to be done. If it’s not done, a big league team will benefit from it.  »
