« Hydrogen represents a significant opportunity for economic development in South Africa, including job creation and monetization of the platinum industry, » a feasibility study by the miner, Department of Science and Innovation, South African National Development Institute, Engie and Bambili -Energy found.

The feasibility study identified three hubs – in Johannesburg, Durban / Richards Bay and Mogalakwena / Limpopo – for nine pilot projects.

Anglo American is already developing a hydrogen-powered fuel cell mining truck, one of nine pilot projects recommended as a priority in the study.

The fuel cell electric transporter – the world’s largest powered by hydrogen – is being built in Anglo’s Mogalakwena platinum mine developed. The company wants to convert its entire fleet to hydrogen by 2030.

« As a leading manufacturer of platinum group metals, we have been working for several years to build the right ecosystem to successfully develop, expand and deploy hydrogen-powered solutions, » said Natascha Viljoen , CEO of Anglo PGM.

« The possibility of using hydrogen to create new engines of economic efficiency has been validated by this feasibility study with our partners. »

However, the study did not expect any supply bottlenecks with regard to the forecast use in Electrolysers and fuel cells needed platinum.

« This demand for platinum is marginal compared to today’s production volume, but could bring the sector a turnover of up to 71 million US dollars in 2030, » says the study.

According to the study, the three hubs were based on locations with potential for high concentration identification of future hydrogen needs, the ability to produce hydrogen and contributions to « just transition » – an economic development plan with positive social impacts especially on more fragile groups and communities.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa also gave his support for the persecution yesterday of green hydrogen opportunities when he said the country needed to move to a low-carbon economy but called for international support Significantly support emissions, « he said in his weekly newsletter.

The Minerals Council South Africa said last week that coal will remain important for decades as it seeks a fair energy transition towards net zero emissions by 2050 .

The feasibility study assumed that the hydrogen valley could contribute to the equitable transition of South Africa and contribute 3.9 to 8.8 billion US dollars to GDP by 2050.

In Australia, the energy division Fortescue Future Industries of the iron ore producer Fortescue Metals Group announced this week to invest up to AUD 1 billion in a green energy production center in Queensland to boost the country’s green hydrogen industry.

Reducing emissions is on the global agenda with COP26, the United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2021, scheduled to begin in Scotland at the end of this month.
