Anupriya Patel, President of Apna Dal – the BJP’s ally in Uttar Pradesh – was sworn in on Wednesday as a member of the reorganized trade union cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The appointment of MP Mirzapur, who is the Belonging to Kurmi Municipality is significant as the municipality plays an important role in the electoral arithmetic of the state that will hold parliamentary elections next year.
Interior Minister Amit Shah met Ms. Patel last month during an action organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party was viewed at their allies in Uttar Pradesh ahead of next year’s elections. At the same meeting, Ms. Patel asked for two ministerial berths for Uttar Pradesh and one in the center.
Anupriya Patel became Minister in 2014 in the first term of the Modi government after the BJP won 71 of the 80 seats in the UP; the Apna Dal added two more and became known. However, her party could not get representation in the second term of the Modi government.
Ms. Patel was accepted amid reports that her party was dissatisfied with the leadership of Prime Minister Yogi Adityanath. Last year, the Apna Dal threatened to leave because the BJP « did not care about its allies »; Its leader had said the party was « free to make its decisions ».
The union cabinet can have a maximum of 81 members. After today’s reshuffle, including the Prime Minister, the cabinet strength will be 78.
Other big names inducted into the Prime Minister’s redesigned cabinet today include former Congress Leader Jyotiraditya Scindia, former Prime Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal , and Pashupati Paras – the LJP leader who led a controversial coup against his nephew Chirag Paswan.
