New Delhi: 41-year-old Colonel Viplav Tripathy, his wife Anuja Shukla (37) and their five-year-old son Abir came along with four Japanese from the Indian army in an explosion of the alleged Naga. terrorists killed near the village of Sekhen in Manipur, Singhat subdivision, Churachandpur district, about 70 km from the state capital Imphal.

The army convoy with the commanding officer, his family members and his men of 46 Assam rifles was on on his way back after visiting a forward base area on the nearby Myanmar border when the improvised explosive device (IED) explosion occurred. Reportedly, shortly after the explosion, the terrorists shot at the convoy to further damage the personnel.

It is not yet clear why the commanding officer’s family members were part of the army team that had visited the front area that was located located in a remote forest.

Tripathy was stationed in Manipur in mid-2020 after being relocated from the canton of Meerut. His father, Subhash, is a senior journalist based in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, who returned to Raigarh last week after spending three months in Imphal with his son.

Viplav Tripathy’s grandfather, Kishori Mohan Tripathy, was a member of the draft constitution committee and nominated member of parliament. He is credited with ensuring the incorporation of the Panchayati Raj system into the constitution.

Viplav’s younger brother Anay is a lieutenant colonel in Assam Rifles. Viplav, born in 1980 and a graduate of the Sainik School, Rewa, joined the army in 2001.

The Indian army has been fighting the Naga terrorists in the region for a long time. In June 2015, 72 Special Forces commandos carried out a 40-minute cross-border operation against members of the two terrorist groups National Socialist Council of Nagaland NSCN (K) and KYKL (Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup) by crossing into Myanmar and targeting at least 35 terrorists by attacks on two camps used by these groups.

The operation was carried out to avenge the deaths of 18 Indian soldiers who were killed by terrorists on June 4th in Chandel, Manipur. The attack was alleged by the United Liberation Front, one of several terrorist groups active in the region.

The Union government has been holding peace talks in Nagaland for several decades with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (IM), the most prominent Naga group, and the Naga National Political Groups (NNPG), an umbrella organization that represents seven groups. A breakthrough came in 2015 with the signing of a framework agreement with NSCN (IM) and another agreement with NNPG in 2017. However, a final agreement has not yet been reached.

Officials say these terrorist groups, including the People’s Revolutionary Party Kangleipak Progressive (PREPAK-Pro), a group suspected of having been involved in today’s incident, have received weapons and financial support from independent units supported by Chinese Intelligence, Ministry of State Security. </ The recent attack on Tripathy and his family members is likely to lead to a similar government response against the terrorist groups as of June 2015. This is the first time members of the army’s families have been targeted by the terrorists.
