« The principle would be a grouping of qualifiers every year and at the end of the season a big competition, a World Cup or continental championship », Wenger said.
« There has to be less mixing in the calendar between the times of club football and the times of international football and thus, for example, fewer transcontinental trips for the players. »
Wenger said he might wish for the October a single international window with fewer qualifying matches.
« There will be no more matches for the players and there will be a mandatory break after the finals give, at least 25 days, « said Wenger, who sees his proposed new format in action in 2028, two years after the 2026 World Cup.
» What people want today are easy-to-understand, high-stakes competitions « he said, insisting that there was » no financial intent « .
» It’s a global project, for men’s football, but also for women’s football and youth competitions, « he added.
