Ashleigh Barty, the number 1 in the world, won her third WTA title this year by defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the final of the Stuttgart clay court tournament on Sunday.

After the victory in Miami and a pre- Australian Open hard court event in Melbourne, Barty added the Stuttgart title, her first clay tournament this season, as the 2019 French Open winner prepares for Roland Garros next month.

One day after her 25th birthday the Australian recovered from losing the first set and won a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over Sabalenka, who needed a medical break after the second set due to an adductor injury.

« Get well , get well – you will be back in no time, « said Barty Sabalenka at the end of an » unbelievable week « for the Australian, who then played the double-finals with partner Jennifer Brady.

Although Sabalenka finished the third set with her right belt on played, she even broke Barty 3-1 in the playoff, but Stuttgart was ultimately unable to contribute to the triumph in Abu Dhabi in January.

The 22-year-old hopes for the clay court tournament in Madrid, which starts on Thursday, to be fit.

« I gave everything despite the injury, but she played really well, » said Sabalenka, who felt the adductor contract for the first time at the end of the opening set.

« Me gave her the opportunity and she took it, she plays really well on clay, it fits her game.

« I was hoping the medical break would help me. I’m just glad I was able to keep playing. «
