At least 16 people died after being trapped in their vehicles by heavy snowfall as tens of thousands of visitors crowded into the Pakistani mountain town of Murree, the interior minister said on Saturday.
The military had been mobilized to Clear roads and save people who are still trapped, said Sheikh Rashid in a video message, adding: « At least 16 to 19 people died in their vehicles. »
Over 100,000 cars have driven into the picturesque town of Murree in the past few days to see the unusually heavy snowfall that would have caused enormous traffic jams on the incoming and outgoing roads, a police spokesman said.
Murree, about 70 kilometers northeast of Islamabad, has long been popular for day trips out of the capital .
The Office of the Prime Minister of Punjab Province said Murree had been declared a « disaster area » and urged people to telz uhalten.
