The government of Bangladesh on Monday approved exporters to export nearly 2,100 tons of hilsa to India on the eve of Durga Puja, the Hindu community’s largest religious festival.

The Ministry of Commerce published on This day a circular about the special permit, which allowed 52 exporters to export 40 tons of Hilsa to India each time.

Hilsa is a very popular and sought-after food fish on the Indian subcontinent. The demand for the fish is very high in the Indian state of West Bengal during the Durga Puja.

The export of Hilsa has been banned since 2012 because the government added the fish to the list of export-restricted items.

The special permit for the export of Hilsa to India on the eve of the Durga Puja has more than quadrupled in volume in the last three years.

In 2019, on the eve of the Durga Puja, at the request of the West Bengal authorities, Bangladesh had the approval for the export of 500 Tons of Hilsa issued to India.

« Initially, we allowed 52 exporters to export 2,080 tons of Hilsa to India as a sign of a good gesture before Durga Puja this year, » Trade Minister Tipu Munshi told New Age on Monday.

He said that around 110 exporters had applied for a permit to export Hilsa, and that the ministry had initially approved 52 exporters and only a few other exporters had a gene after their applications and other documents have been examined.

« A special permit was issued for the export of Hilsa to India as a greeting for the largest religious festival in our neighboring country, and this would have no effect on the offer and the price of the item in the local market, ”said the minister.

According to a circular from the Ministry of Commerce, export from Hilsa to India will continue until October 10th.

In August, the Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association sent one Letter to the Ministry of Commerce asking for permission to export Hilsa.

The BFFEA said in its letter that Hilsa production has increased 79 percent in the past decade and the country has increased in fiscal year 2018-19 Produced 5.33 lakh tons of the fish.

If the government allowed the export of only 5 percent of the total Hilsa production, this would not have a negative impact on the local market, the letter says.
