Bengal saved the country, Mamata Banerjee said today as her Trinamool Congress raced to a landslide victory in the state and fought off a formidable challenge from the BJP.
« Bengal saved India. This is a victory for democracy They said they would win more than 200 seats, but they were decimated. Bengal decimated the ego of BJP, « said Mamata Banerjee, 66.
» The BJP went on and on over twin-engined Sarkar while I did Assured you all that I will have a double century. This is Bangla’s victory … this is Bengal’s victory … this is your victory. This victory saved Bengal, it saved the culture and tradition of Bengal. « </ Her own possible defeat in Nandigram to Trinamool defector Suvendu Adhikari, who headed the BJP in Bengal, was a bit sobering, but Mamata Banerjee just shrugged. "Don't worry about nandigram, I fought for nandigram because I fought against a movement. It's okay. Let the nandigram people make whatever judgment they want, I accept that. I don't mind . We won more than 221 seats in the state and the BJP lost the election, "she said.
The Trinamool seemed poised to win over 210 of the 294 seats in Bengal, and the BJP was 78, as the count neared its end.
Mamata Banerjee showed up for the first time without her wheelchair – which became a constant in her campaign after sustaining a leg injury on March 10 in Nandigram – and said to the Party workers celebrating: « I appeal to all of you to go home and shower, sanitize well, and keep social distance from others. Please don’t crowd around and indulge in partying. »
As your state a steady increase in cases and reports deaths in Covid, Ms. Banerjee said she will make fighting the pandemic a priority.
« My first priority will be to work in the interests of the people – everyone affected by COVID-19. The government’s priority in Bengal will be to fight Covid, « she said.
» I have not yet made a decision on the lockdown, and that will be taken after I assess the situation after the new government’s oath ceremony «
On Saturday, Bengal reported the highest single-day COVID-19 deaths at 103 and over 17,500 cases.
