December 23 (UPI) – President Joe Biden signed a bill on Thursday aimed at expanding funding for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The Accelerating Access to Critical Therapies for ALS will provide $ 100 million annually between 2022 and 2026. The legislation aims to open new avenues for funding early access to ALS investigative therapies.

That of Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, R-Neb. Led bill will accelerate the development of therapy for ALS and neurodegenerative diseases through a public-private partnership and encourage the development of interventions for rare neurodegenerative diseases. « Treatments are limited and results are still the same, » said he has been talking about the disease since Lou Gehrig was diagnosed by the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939.

« Today we are finally closer to new treatments than ever and hopefully … God willing, close to a cure. »

“ACT for ALS represents a monumental change for people suffering from neurodegenerative diseases. The new law does two major things: it changes the paradigm of disease research and regulation and creates a new avenue to promising new treatments. It drives hope, « said Fortenberry.

» Thanks to everyone in the ALS community for courageously driving the hope that led to this moment. For decades, ALS patients have undergone tests and studies, therapies and placebos in accordance with the rules of the current health policy framework. But advances have been inconsistent, even controversial, with serious barriers to promising new treatments. Today America has gone a new way. «
