Birmingham 2022 is « really confident » that they can organize a « really successful » Queen’s Baton Relay ahead of next summer’s Commonwealth Games, despite the forced changes due to COVID-19 regulations.

« The Soul quest has got us where we are with the baton relay still going on, « Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president Louise Martin told Insidethegames as the baton today at Birmingham Open Media, an arts center in the city where the Commonwealth Games are going to take place next year.

“Let’s use it as a test run for the future in many ways instead of saying you have to spend a lot of money every time to get a lot of people through to send it to the Commonwealth.

Dame Louise added, « We have people in every country who take care of it and pass it on and make sure it gets back here safely for the opening ceremony, that’s all, wa s we need. «

The baton was designed in the West Midlands by Coventry-based artist Laura Nyahuye, who led the project.

» It’s completely different from anything we’ve had before « , said Dame Louise, who will be with the Queen next week when she delivers her message at Buckingham Palace.

« It’s really nice, it’s very difficult to explain, you have to see it and look at it. »

Dame Louise said she « went through how they did it » and made sure it was easy to open – her CGF predecessor Prince Imran struggled to open the baton during the 2014 opening ceremony, and there were issues in 2018 as well.

« The last two games have had a problem, but I’ve tried and it works for the moment. »

The baton is scheduled to fly from Birmingham Airport to Cyprus, the first destination on a planned 294-day itinerary .

« At first we weren’t in a global one n pandemic and then went into pandemic, so it’s a very unusual season from this point of view, « Hampton told insidethegames.

» It gave us the chance to rethink all of our plans, to think carefully about why we do what we do and make sure we can deliver a really sustainable, spectacular season in a strange new world.

« I don’t think we’re going to be wearing gloves right now, but I think we are will be aware of this and work within the parameters that exist in each country at the time, « added Hampton.

In homage to the gold, silver and bronze medals, the baton is made of copper, aluminum and brass poured.

« The most important thing from our point of view is that everyone stays safe and the relay is delivered safely and appropriately.

» We are working in turn with each of the countries to follow the guidelines of the government in this country to understand.

« Instead of applying our guidelines and understanding everywhere, it’s about working closely together to make sure we get the right delivery.

The baton is expected to be Christmas in Seychelles, New Years in the Spend Maldives and Commonwealth Day in New Zealand.

After a trip to the Falkland Islands on June 7th, it will tour the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man before setting off through Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

It should be on Cross to England July 4th with the Commonwealth Games scheduled to begin July 28.
