A family of Tamil asylum seekers detained on Christmas Island will not be relocated to New Zealand or the United States despite previously advised by the Australian government that it is a possibility.
Australian Border officials Force removed the family from the regional town of Biloela in Queensland after their visa expired in 2018, and they have been on Christmas Island since 2019.
But three-year-old Tharnicaa Murugappan was recently medically evacuated to Perth Children’s Hospital after being severely injured was ill.
« Regarding relocation options, the agreements we have made with the United States and New Zealand apply to refugees. » She told 4BC Radio on Thursday.
Secretary of State Marise Payne had previously proposed , The US and New Zealand are options for the family, but Ms. Andrews said these countries are not options.
“The family has no access to these two programs because they are intended for refugee resettlement, « said Ms. Andrews.
However, she avoided answering directly when asked if Ms. Payne was wrong about this option.
« They do not have refugee status and this has been confirmed every time an application has been made to court for these family members, » said Ms. Andrews.
« That means we have no duty to protect them, which means that they are should return to their home country of Sri Lanka.
“You currently have a petition in court and there are other actions being taken by the family. It must take time to continue.
« I just think this problem has been around for a long time. I think they have to solve it, ”he told reporters on Thursday.
– If that means you need to use any of your indemnities under the law, just do it and solve the problem – ??? we actually need workers in Australia at the moment â ???? and get this very unfortunate and internationally somewhat embarrassing problem past us.
Attorney General Michaelia Cash said the parents familiarized the children in Australia with the rules. and the government is a very, very tough attitude. about asylum seekers arriving by boat.
– Don’t you think that people smugglers don’t watch Australia every day? You do, â ???? she said in Perth on Wednesday, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
« We are looking for alternatives, but personally I believe that because of the consequences of blinking, it is the correct posture. »
Ms. Andrews also dismissed any suggestion back that Tharnicaa had been denied adequate medical care on Christmas Island.
« What I was told by Border Force is that there is access to medical care on Christmas Island » that the family has access to it â ???? and once it has been recommended that an evacuation take place to a facility in Perth, ????? She said.
â ?? Your health is the main concern … I think you are being looked after as best as possible at the momentâ € ™ ???? She said.
« We are doing everything we can to make her and her mother, who is with her comfortable, comfortable. »
