The Bees were six minutes before the end of Emmanuel Dennis’s goal, but were able to equalize through Pontus Jansson.
Then Mbeumo, who represented the Covid-19 hit, kept Ivan Toney , the nerve to secure a memorable win.
Dennis seemed to have breathed life into Watford’s attempt at survival with his header in the first half, but the bees came back to sting the hornets.
Watford- Coach Claudio Ranieri had previously said that this game would really start the season after a brutal series of games, but now there are four defeats in the trot for the Italian.
Brentford, even without Covid-19 defender Ethan Pinnock, dominated the early stages and Shandon Baptiste’s early volley was tipped over the bar by Watford keeper Daniel Bachmann.
In the middle of the first half, Mbeumo chased Baptiste’s ball over the right wing, cutting William Ekong and turned a shot that seemed intended for the far corner until Bachmann reached out a hand to hit him far.
That seemed to bring the Hornets to life, however, and when Brentford gave the ball away cheaply at the center line , he found his way to Joshua King, who hit from the left and slammed a low shot into the far post.
The loose ball was deflected to a corner and after Tom Cleverley’s delivery Dennis walked home in front of Bees captain Jansson to nod.
Dennis could have managed a second shortly afterwards, but with his header from Moussa Sissoko’s cross just barely got enough.

Brentford was close to equalizing just before the break, but Charlie Goode’s header from a Vitaly Janelt corner landed on the roof of the net.
After the break, Mbeumo would have been better with a header from Mads Roerslev’s cross Rico Henry’s successor blocked Kiko Femenia.
Bachmann rescued Watford 15 minutes before the end with a jump from Christian Norgaard before Alvaro Fernandez saved King’s shot at the other end.
But six minutes before the end they won the Bees equalized when Jansson landed his head on Janelt’s flank.
And until the five minutes of stoppage time, substitute Bees Saman Ghoddos Ekong slipped and was brought down by the Hornets defender.
Toney may be « the best penalty taker in the world » according to Brentford boss Thomas Frank, but Mbeumo was clearly paying attention, copying his absent attack partner’s approach and burying the penalty in the corner.
