Brisbane won the battle for Kotoni Staggs when the Broncos fought off poaching threats to secure the strike weapon in a $ 2.8 million retention coup.

Staggs development comes as the Broncos push for halfback Adam Reynolds. Coach Kevin Walters would like to invite the skipper north from South Sydney to tour Brisbane’s $ 27 million high-performance facility.

The Broncos plan to partner with Staggs and Reynolds for the next season. The first stage has been completed. Staggs has advised the Brisbane hierarchy that he will not be leaving the club.

As first reported by News Corp, Staggs was offered a four-year contract valued at $ 700,000 per season, and the Broncos bosses have formalized its retention through the end of 2025.

This is a huge boost for the Broncos, besieged by Titans, Parramatta, and Knights, trying to lure Staggs away from Red Hill with offers of up to $ 800,000 a year.

As speculation mounts that Brisbane boom winger Xavier Coates might leave the club to join Melbourne next season, Staggs confirmed he will remain loyal to the Broncos.

« I’ve always been told to chase my dream and my dream as a little kid was to be here with the Broncos and I’ll be here for four more years.

« I remember growing up as a little kid and kicking around the park imagining I was in Broncos colors to make my debut and play here for three years and then play another four years that I’m pretty proud of it with some guys I’ve known for a while.

« We can really look forward to a club. I want to keep growing and helping the younger players and being a leader and mentor. »

Staggs is currently facing a knee reconstruction and faces sanctions from the NRL Integrity Unit after he was expelled from a Brisbane pub two weeks ago.

But there is no question that Staggs is about to be selected by NSW Origin and will play fifth and eighth for the Broncos next season.

« I’ve made mistakes outside of the field but I’m learning my lessons and from now on I want to be the best person I can be and be a role model. It’s up to me to put my head in the right place and myself to move. » forward, « he said.

« I’m here to message the fans that I’m here to stay with the Brisbane Broncos. This is the club I’ve always dreamed of and made at home. »

« Kotoni’s passion for the Broncos has kept him at the club as has his competitiveness – he’s the type of player we need here, » he said.

« He grew up watching the Broncos win premierships and he wants to win one here himself.

« We have a great core group of players who have long-term contracts and all of them have gone through the Broncos system and Kotoni adds: He signed up to us because he believes the future is bright here. »

After securing Staggs, Walters will now fly Reynolds to Queensland for a tour of Brisbane’s state-of-the-art setup at Red Hill.

Walters met Reynolds in Sydney last Sunday and the Broncos are armed with a three-year contract worth $ 2.4 million plus the Brisbane captain.

« He would be a big commitment for our club if we got Adam Reynolds, » he said.

« You can see his kicking game with Nathan Cleary is the best of all halves in the competition and his game management would be perfect for our young team.

« We have a really good striker package, but we only need this experienced game manager to move on to the next level. »
