Conservative right-wing commentator Candace Owens has compared Australia to the Taliban, claiming that the US is Candace should « march in » on a new episode of their late night talk show.
Owens, who has expressed some pretty eccentric views about COVID, gave a long monologue on the situation in Australia on her show Tuesday night.
During the speech, Owens reads a message she received from a friend of her husband’s family in Queensland explaining the COVID-19 restrictions we have all lived with over the past two years.
“She expressed how the mental state of everyone around her deteriorates greatly. She shared a message with him that she had received from a friend of hers – a woman who lives in Queensland – and the news is really shocking, « Owens said.
She then outlined restrictions on guests in homes and around Events like funerals, curfews, QR code check-in, and the five reasons to leave home during phase four of restrictions. Owens also talked about the state border closings – which were a sore spot for thousands of Australians during the pandemic – but particularly neglected the fact that, for the most part, those strict closings were only carried out during major outbreaks. Although no one likes border closings, it is simply wrong to claim that all borders were like this during the entire pandemic.
She then compares the current situation in Australia with the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
« In the last Twenty years ago, the United States spent trillions of dollars overseas in Afghanistan waging a war – which, by the way, we lost. But we were told that the war was necessary anyway, the slaughter of American sons and daughters on foreign soil because we were fighting for a noble cause – to spread democracy in a tyrannical country, to free an oppressed people, « she said .
« So I’m going to ask the same educating politicians and media representatives a question: When are we going to send troops to Australia? » When do we invade Australia and free an oppressed people suffering from a totalitarian regime? When are we going to spend trillions of dollars spreading democracy in Australia? «
Sure, Australia had some pretty tough public health regulations, but this is – by definition – not totalitarianism. Totalitarianism is « a political system in which those in power are in complete control and do not give people the freedom to oppose them » and although some freedoms of protest have been restricted because of a real risk to public health and safety, every single Australian citizen has the right to express their opinion in the next local, state and federal elections and to vote the rulers out. So when do we start? ”Owens asked before using Australia as a rebound point to cast doubts on the US government and the virus as a whole. Imagine that.
