Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher saves on penalties during the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup at Anfield in Liverpool

Carl Markham

Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher saved Liverpool 5-4 on penalties Leicester won, two penalties, sending them into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup against Arsenal.

Substitute Diogo Jota scored the winning goal – after coming off the bench to score in the second half – but the The real hero was Takumi Minamino, who made it 3-3 with six minutes remaining.

The guests collapsed under the pressure exerted in the second half after taking two two-goal lead when Jamie Vardy scored his ninth and tenth goals in 14 games against the understaffed Reds.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain briefly scored the 2-1 before a brilliant goal from James Maddison restored the lead of the Foxes.

However, the introduction of first-team reinforcements for the second half changed the dynamic when Jota and League Cup specialist Minamino forced a penalty shoot-out with his sixth in five games.

Two years ago, Liverpool started a youth team at this stage when the seniors won the Club World Cup in Qatar and lost 5-0 at Aston Villa.

This time, Reds manager Jürgen Klopp, who faced five games in 12 days, made 10 changes with three academy players on the team and another five on the bench.

In contrast, Leicester were practically at full strength after a 10-day hiatus due to a Covid enforced hiatus, with Vardy returning to partner Patson Daka in a front two with Maddison at the top of midfield diamond.

But despite their clinical graduation, the Foxes’ advantage was that the hosts were their own worst enemies, as well as giving the ball away on all three goals Liverpool conceded in the first half.

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp celebrates with Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher after the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup in Anfield

Given the rotation and the staff, that may not come as a surprise, but it was the last thing they patched up in such a way Crew needed.

Joe Gomez set the tone in the fifth minute when Daka countered after losing the ball and Kelleher forced a save.

Liverpool were not so lucky with the next ball possession ban, because when Kostas Tsimikas turned a blind pass inside, the guests took the opportunity to break through the center of the defense, as Kelleher got Vardy’s shot in the hand, but not in the Was able to fend him off.

Four minutes later, the former English killer had doubled his record when Neco Williams, a full-back who played as right winger, lost the ball high up on the pitch and Daka unmasked 19-year-old Billy Koumetio on the left, before crossing to Vardy side foot home.

At this point it seemed like Liverpool were about to be put on the run, so disjointed was their game, but Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal changed the swing and for a 15 minute period it was Leicester who wobbled.

Tsimikas’ long cross was thrown back by Williams so Roberto Firmino could bring him down before hanging up so the midfielder could drill home.

The next goal in a wild half seemed crucial and went to Leicester, this time when young right-back Conor Bradley misplaced a pass and was cruelly punished by a 25-yarder from Maddison who Kelleher should have been better off with .

Vardy should have scored his hat trick after Gomez made a mistake and defeated the goalkeeper but not the post.

Klopp replaced his three Academy players with considerable first-team experience in the form of James Milner, Jota and Ibrahima Konate – quickly followed by Naby Keita – to bring some control into the second half.

That answered the misunderstandings that Klopp was devaluing the League Cup, but it was Leicester who threatened first as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall forced a low save from Kelleher.

But when Jota shot home in the 68th minute, the tie came back to life and the Liverpool manager did his best to whip up the crowd as Leicester began to crumble.

Only a brilliant recovery tackle by Wilfred Ndidi prevented a seemingly sure goal for Firmino, while Kasper Schmeichel managed to parry Jota’s header after dipping into Keita’s long-range shot and it looked like the foxes would stop .

But one last attempt resulted in Milner throwing a ball into the box and Minamino shooting home to a penalty shoot-out and eventually a semifinals of the 18th of 2012.
