The tragic death of prominent investor Charles de Vaulx has reportedly shocked Wall Street. The 59-year-old asset manager apparently committed suicide on Monday April 26, 2021 after jumping from the 10th floor of a Midtown Manhattan tower. His death was dubbed a « Shakespearean tragedy » by an inside source, which told the New York Post that many of his stocks had grown significantly in recent months. He is survived by his wife and two children.
At around 1 p.m. on Monday, de Vaulx entered the Midtown Tower at 717 Fifth Avenue, where his International Value Advisers (IVA) office is located. According to a construction worker, he jumped from the 10th floor shortly afterwards. He was pronounced dead by first responders on the scene at 1:05 p.m. Although the cause of his suicide is still being investigated, New York police have determined that no foul is suspected.

Seven weeks before de Vaulx’s suicide had his company IVA, according to Reuters abruptly announced the liquidation of their funds and the cessation of business. The completion of the liquidation was announced by April 19, 2021.
By the end of 2020, the company’s total net worth was estimated at $ 863 million after falling from its peak of a staggering $ 20 billion.
« It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of our Chairman and CIO Charles de Vaulx. The entire IVA community expresses its deepest condolences to his family during this difficult time, » the company mourned in a recent statement for de Vaulx.
Charles de Vaulx was best recognized as Chief Investment Officer, Co-Portfolio Manager and Partner at International Value Advisers, which he founded in 2007.
Moroccan-born Charles de Vaulx holds a Masters Degree in Finance of the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Rouen in France. He joined SocGen Funds in 1987 and worked as an analyst for the legendary French investor Jean-Marie Eveillard. He rose through the ranks and was promoted to Associate Portfolio Manager in 1996. After SocGen was renamed First Eagle Funds in 1999 following the transfer of ownership, de Vaulx was named co-portfolio manager of four funds and managed several international accounts.
De Vaulx, known for his penchant for undervalued and unloved stocks, was named Morningstar’s International Equity Manager of the Year in 2001 along with mentor Jean-Marie Eveillard. After Eveillard stepped down in 2004, de Vaulx became his designated successor as senior portfolio manager.
To everyone’s surprise, he and a group of partners left First Eagle in 2006 after a dispute with investors. When IVA was founded in 2007, it quickly gained prominence as one of the fastest growing funds in the US. It became a company with only 40 employees that was closely followed on Wall Street
De Vaulx’s ideas, however, regularly collided with his longtime business partner Chuck de Lardemelle. He wasn’t ready to let Lardemelle take control, either. The latter eventually announced his resignation in July 2020, unsettling investors and setting off an alarm for the company’s future. The rest of the year was turbulent for IVA, and thus for de Vaulx, as the fund shrank from USD 20 billion to around USD 3 billion. Losing investor trust was a blow to de Vaulx, who wanted to be a legend himself.
