China said Thursday it had suspended an economic deal with Australia in an obvious response to Canberra’s abolition of a Belt and Road Infrastructure Pact and threats to reverse a contract to lease Darwin Port to a Chinese company .
Relations between the two sides collapsed after Canberra called for an independent investigation into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic and banned telecommunications giant Huawei from building Australia’s 5G network.
China – Australia’s largest trading partner – has already imposed tariffs on more than a dozen key industries, including wine, barley and coal, to decimate exports.
In the latest accusation, the strategic economic dialogue between China and Australia was « based on the current stance » of the Australian Government discontinued, said China’s National Development – and Reform Commission in a statement on Thursday, accusing some officials of a « Cold War mindset » and « ideological discrimination ».
