Chris Harrison, the longtime presenter of the Bachelor franchise, is leaving the show for good after receiving an eight-digit payout, Deadline reported Tuesday.

His departure marks the end of nearly two decades as a presenter and is coming just a day after the premiere of the new Bachelorette season, co-hosted by two former leading actresses.

Representatives from ABC Entertainment and Warner Horizon Television did not immediately respond to questions about Harrison’s departure. But Deadline reported that as part of his exit deal, Harrison agreed to remain silent about the « dirty laundry » of the franchise and receive an eight-figure severance payment.

Harrison announced in February that he would be leaving the franchise temporarily, amid a racial controversy that saw a candidate in the 25th.

Previous racist photos and social media posts by Rachael Kirkconnell, the eventual winner, reappeared on the show’s airing, causing an uproar among fans and other attendees out. One of the photos showed Kirkconnell at an antebellum plantation theme party in 2018.

In an interview, Harrison lamented criticism of Kirkconnell, saying that while he was « not defending Rachael, » it was « some kind of party, » he said that many people left « .

His comments sparked a huge backlash from Bachelor Nation, and Harrison later apologized for his comments, saying he would » stand aside for a while « .

In an interview however, with Good Morning America in March, he said he intended to return to the franchise.
