CM – Citing destroyed Bamiyan Buddhas, UNESCO calls for Afghan cultural protection

Days after the Taliban came to power in Kabul, the United Nations Department of Culture called for the protection of Afghan cultural heritage and a safe environment for artists.

Afghanistan is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Bamiyan Valley where the Taliban blew up two giant Buddha statues before the Islamist group was ousted from power in 2001.

“In the midst of rapidly evolving events and 20 years after the deliberate destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas, a world heritage site , the Director General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, calls for the preservation of Afghan cultural heritage, « UNESCO said in a statement on Thursday.

UNESCO said Afghanistan’s diverse heritage and cultural sites are an integral part of Afghan history and identity of importance to all of humanity.

“For the future of Afghanistan, this wah is of vital importance protect and preserve trademarks, ”said UNESCO.
