Heritage Auctions in Dallas said the 1996 game sold yesterday, breaking the previous record price for a single video game sale.
Super Mario 64 was the best-selling game on the Nintendo 64 and the first to which showed the Mario character in 3D.
The sale follows an unopened copy of Nintendo’s The Legend Of Zelda, which sold for £ 625,000 on Friday.
Valarie McLeckie, Heritage video game specialist, said that Auction house was shocked when a game broke the Zelda record in two days.
In April, the auction house sold an unopened copy of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros, bought in 1986 and left in a desk drawer, for £ 475,000.
