« The shipment was discovered by the drug control police who found eight black bags with the drugs »
A well-known former soccer player was arrested in Costa Rica when a criminal gang tried to export shipments of cocaine disguised as banana pulp to Donegal.
The South American country’s judicial authorities took Andy Furtado Dixon, 40 ) and twelve others who they believe are members of two different criminal gangs involved in two international drug trafficking operations.
Dixon, who has worked at the Limon port terminal for at least six years, was part of a group of six arrested on Monday August 31st while trying to export cocaine hydrochloride from Costa Rica to Ireland.
Former international Furtado Dixon played nine international matches for Costa Rica and made his debut in a friendly against Trinidad and Tobago in February 2007.
“You would have staged an operation in March to carry 3,466 kilograms of the chemical in a container Bringing banana pulp into the port terminal and exporting it to Donegal in Europe, ”reports local media.
The Deputy Public Prosecutor of Limón assumes that the substances were brought into containers that are processed via APM terminals, « taking advantage of the fact that some of the suspects work in the port terminal and could thus evade the controls » .
They are under investigation under file 21-000948-0472-PE for allegedly organizing to « export large quantities of cocaine hydrochloride from Costa Rica to Ireland, » said the Limón Deputy Prosecutor in a press release.
According to investigators, these suspects were involved in an operation that took place in Ireland between the ages of 18.
« Despite the group’s alleged illegal maneuvers, the program was discovered by the drug control police, who found eight black bags with the drugs, » said the Ministry of Public Relations.

The other seven detainees, who formed « another structure apparently dedicated to the same activity, » consisted of port terminal workers as well as others who were employed as private security guards.
This group is charged with on April 26th attempted to move 600 pounds of cocaine hydrochloride that was intercepted. However, they managed to send 999 kilograms of the drug to Belgium, where it was discovered by the local authorities on May 10th.
The Drug Control Police (PCD) carried out 15 raids on Tuesday to dismantle both criminal groups, which have been linked to a total shipment of nearly five tons of cocaine to Europe.
During the raids, around 4,000,000 yen (€ 5,435) from the first group and 580,000 yen (€ 788) from the second group as well as a vehicle and cell phones were confiscated.
The operations are part of police operations in the port area where other seizures had previously taken place, particularly in 2020, the year a record level of cocaine was seized in the country.
The press office of the port terminal, the main export point for Costa Rican exports, has promised to work hand in hand with the authorities as they criticized any « criminal behavior » of their officials.
« As a responsible company, we have no tolerance for reports of criminal behavior, so we will continue to support the investigations of the authorities, » they were quoted as saying.
« Our goal is to foster a culture in our employees that is based on safe operation, righteousness, and always with a strong commitment to do the right thing. »
