Columbus Crew and Cruz Azul meet in the third final of the Campeones Cup. The game will take place on Wednesday at Lower.com Field in the capital of Ohio.

This match is a once-in-a-lifetime encounter. The winner after 90 minutes is the champion. If there is a tie after the end of the game, the title will be determined on penalties.

This matchup features two reigning champions, not the find the best version of their play style. Still, they know this trophy could be important in helping them turn their respective seasons around.

Columbus did not have the success many expected after winning the MLS Cup last year. Columbus ranks ninth in the Eastern Conference with 34 points. Caleb Porter’s men seem to have turned the corner and played a streak of three games without loss.

For Columbus, they are entering a period of the season where their remaining games have a « final feel ». The game against Cruz Azul is a real final, but in their last seven games they face direct rivals for playoff spots in five of them when they face DC United, Inter Miami, Orlando City, New York Bulls and Philadelphia Union .

Gyasi Zardes is in top form for The Crew. The US international was named Team of the Week after his performance against CF Montreal last weekend. Zardes scored a brace in a 2-1 win last Saturday and is starting to find his chances.
