LEEDS, England: India’s opener Rohit Sharma and negative pressure batsman Cheteshwar Pujara fought an uphill battle to get the tourists to 112-1 at tea on the third day of the third test in Headingley on Friday.
The tourists, who were all 78 in the first innings, remain on their heels after taking a huge 354 run lead.
They lost the opener KL Rahul at lunch, but Rohit and Pujara made it through the wicketless second session and forged a still thriving 78-run partnership.
Rohit hit 59 at break, while Pujara was 40, India still 242 behind.
England used to lose their last two wickets quickly, to be in their robust answer to India’s meager first innings total for 432.
Rahul was awarded Ollie Robinson lbw on six, but the batsman hesitantly reviewed the decision, which was overturned after the reps confirmed, that the ball missed the stump.
Craig Overton soon dismissed the opener for eight when the bowler edged and Jonny Bairstow dived to the left for a stunning one-handed catch on the second slip.
Rohit survived a few narrow lbw appeals and countered occasionally, such as when he ran a rising Robinson delivery for six over the slip cordon.
Pujara came out to with his team in dire straits and under growing Hitting whispers about his future after missing a fifty in his previous 12 innings.
As if to silence criticism of his unflattering punch rate, the batsman hit three early limits, went with one run -A ball rate before bowing his head and focusing on rebuilding.
