Danone, the parent company of Dannon, Silk, Activia, Evian and other food companies, posted e Shared a thread on regenerative agriculture. The company stated that through agriculture we have the power to work towards healthier and more sustainable food systems, and that regenerative agriculture (RegAg) can play a key role in combating climate change while creating more inclusive societies.
On Twitter -Thread shared some of its milestones and key implications with Danone. The company’s journey began in 2017 and has worked with farmers and partners to convert over 150,000 acres into RegAg, which is now 12% of its direct sourcing. Due to its progress at RegAg, the company reduced 50% of its CO2 emissions in 2020.
Danone defines RegAg as a set of agricultural practices that protect sow water, respect animal welfare and the key role of farmers as well as the Recognize the positive effects of agriculture while taking into account the economic viability of agriculture.
“Regenerative agriculture describes cultivation and grazing practices that, among other things, reverse climate change by restoring soil organic matter and restoring degraded soil biodiversity – which leads to both carbon depletion and also leads to an improvement in the water cycle. ”
In a report that Danone shared on Twitter, the company spoke of the dual nature of agriculture. On the one hand it can degrade resources, on the other hand it can regenerate. Soil, it is said, can be a powerhouse at pulling excess carbon from the atmosphere, absorbing excess rainwater, and promoting biodiversity. The report cited a survey by the Boston Consulting Group of over 3,000 participants from around the world. The survey found that 70% of respondents are now more aware than they were before the Covid-19 pandemic that human activities are a threat to the environment. 75% of respondents agreed that environmental issues are just as worrying as health issues – so it’s not surprising that 71% of consumers are choosing sustainable products since 2016.
Danone wants to transform agriculture from challenge to solution . The challenges facing agriculture include 70% of freshwater use, which causes one fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions, one million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction and 33% of the world’s soils are degraded – just to name a few things.
Those of The solution proposed by Danone with RegAg is to increase the carbon content of the soil by 2%. This would bring the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere back to safe levels. The company also found that organically farmed soils have a 20–40% higher water holding capacity than conventionally farmed soils. And in some areas, water sources that have dried up for many years have been flowing again thanks to regenerative agriculture.
In 2018, Danone worked with WWF France together with other experts on the definition of a holistic approach that benefits nature, people and animals. The group lists these three principles at the core of RegAg:
1⃣ a #RegenerativeAgriculture Scorecard developed with @WWFFrance that guides farmers on their regenerative journey 🧑🌾 regardless of whether they are just starting out or are well on their way ➡️ https : //t.co/VuDyzKb3fA
Danone emphasized the importance of these core principles and how they owe the indigenous peoples a debt, while building on traditional methods while incorporating current technologies like artificial intelligence.
« These three Synergies are critical if we are to reverse climate change and create more equitable and humane food systems. Regenerative agriculture is deeply indebted to the indigenous peoples who have maintained their agricultural practices in harmony with nature, even if they have been abandoned by conventional agriculture. It builds on traditional methods such as mixed and polyculture while aiming to maximize impact and scope, including through technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. ”
The company noted that farmers and Farm workers are the primary leaders in the transition to RegAg and that it is committed to supporting them everywhere along the way. The company now has RegAg programs in the US, France, Spain, Mexico, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt and Romania and has converted over 150,000 acres of land to RegAg, which is 12% of its direct sourcing. In the US, Danone has the most comprehensive regenerative milk program in the country on 82,000 hectares. It focuses on reducing tillage and chemical pesticides while expanding catch crops. So far, the program has reduced the equivalent of 80,000 tons of carbon dioxide and captured over 20,000 tons of carbon.
& we certainly need consumers 🛍️ who have the power to shift demand through what they eat and drink every day.
