Denmark helped a US secret service to eavesdrop on calls and text messages from Angela Merkel and other leading politicians from Germany, France, Sweden and Norway during Barack Obama’s presidency.
The operation is intended to target the German Chancellor, her foreign minister and opposition leader in 2012 and 2014 as well as against a number of unnamed high-ranking politicians and officials from other US allies in Northern Europe.
The Danish military intelligence service made it possible for the US National Security Agency (NSA) to exploit communications from neighboring governments through a bugging post near Copenhagen Airport and a secret « back door » to underwater cables, according to DR, Denmark’s public broadcaster.
