Experts are working to free a whale trapped in a shark net off the Gold Coast and are again calling for the devices to be removed during the migration season.
But Queensland typically sees a series each migration season such incidents, and conservation groups have long called for the shark control nets to be removed while whales pass through.
The government’s animal release team is working to get the animal out of the network off Coolangatta with the help of Sea World experts.
Sea Shepherd Australia said shark nets have taken a heavy toll on whales over the past decade. « Since 2011, at least 49 whales have been caught in these shark nets and on drum lines, » said the group’s shark activist. Jonathan Clark, Wednesday.
NSW is already removing shark nets to protect whales as they migrate, and Sea Shephed says Queensland must do the same immediately.
