Millions of dollars are being spent on new fences on Fraser Island to reduce interactions between the native dingo population and visitors to the island.
Nearly 7 km of fences are being installed around Orchid Beach after two incidents involving dingoes in the community – including an attack on a two-year-old boy.
Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said while families who went to the island remained vigilant while traveling near the dingo habitat, there have been a number of incidents in which people have been injured.
« Fencing protects visitors, Orchid Beach locals and K’gari’s indigenous dingo populations who our rangers believe will stop being scared when they approach people because they intentionally fed or ate leftover food, » she said .
The new fence, which will cost $ 2 million, is the latest addition to the fences protecting 24 campsites across K’gari and townships like Happy Valley and Eurong.
Adrian Tantari, MP for Hervey Bay, said the fence would ensure visitors are « as safe as possible » while protecting the dingo population from human interaction.
« It will also be an important reminder for people to be aware that they are visiting an area where dingoes are native and to be dingosafe each time they visit, » he said.
The environmental department will now work with representatives from the Butchulla People on the design and alignment of the fence, including the entrance gates for vehicles and pedestrians.
« K’gari is world famous for its beaches, flora, fauna and longstanding Aboriginal culture and association, » said Ms. Scanlon.
« It’s why thousands of Queenslanders flock to the island every year, who in turn help the local economy and the environment.
« The Butchulla have run K’gari as their traditional owners for thousands of years and we will work with them to get this right. »
On-site fines of $ 2,135 may be imposed on those who intentionally feed or disturb dingoes on the island.
