SAN DIEGO – The same way the San Diego Padres season seems to be going, it got off to a promising start, wowing local fans and raising high hopes to only cause disappointments.

Manny Machado’s flyball in the fourth inning Tuesday night was caught by Dodger’s left fielder AJ Pollock, who jumped and reached over the wall to rob Machado of a two-run home run that would have given the Padres momentum and lead .

You never led. Pollock had a two-run single with his two-run steal, and the Dodgers stuck to beating the Padres for the first time since April’s 5-2 at Petco Park.

« Honestly, I thought about the last time I tried to rob a homer and embarrassed myself, » joked Pollock, referring to an unfortunate attempt at Pete Alonso of the New York Mets robbing a home run on Saturday at Dodger Stadium. “I saw that it was wearing a bit and came back to the wall. I didn’t want to jump too late and run into the wall like last time. … The timing was right and I was able to grab it.

“You don’t get that many opportunities – where you have a catchable ball over the fence to play on. It’s cool when the steps are right, the timing is right and you can play that for your teammate.  »

The two teams, which should be in lock step all year round and produce the best race in NL West in years, are moving in opposite directions.

The Padres got out of the second NL wildcard (the Cincinnati Reds are now leading them with a game for that place) by losing 10 of their last 12 games. The Dodgers have now risen and won 14 of their last 16 – even though they are only 2½ games behind the Giants … in the best race NL West has seen in years.

The Dodgers were leading 1-0 when Machado’s Flyball blew up thanks to a solo home run by Will Smith in the second inning.

Thanks to Pollock, Smith’s homer was the only hit in the game until Eric Hosmer’s one-out double in the fifth inning.

Dodgers starter Julio Urias worked out a first and third jam this inning. The left-hander had just returned from the injured list, was 10 days (but only one start) missing with a bruised calf and couldn’t get past the fifth inning.

After Pollock had defended his lead in one run in the fourth run, he extended it in the seventh. Justin Turner took the lead with a single and finished third with a Corey Seager double. Both held on to an infield single, with Machado choking off Chris Taylor’s hard ground ball on the line but unable to get up and make a game.

Pollock drove them both into the field with a single to real square. Since the beginning of July, Pollock has been beating 0.363 (57 for 157) with 28 RBIs.

Alexander: Dodgers thrive by not worrying about placement

« I think he’s been playing baseball as well as anyone since the (All-Star) hiatus, » said Roberts. “Right-handed, hit left-handed, play a really good defense, be dynamic at the bases. He’s sluggish, but he can downshift and take a base hit when we need him.

« When some guys get a little cold, he picked them all up and was one of our most consistent performances in the second half. »

The Dodgers put two more runs on the board in the eighth game and built on just one hit (a lead-off double from Trea Turner) to make it 5-0.

Their status in the bullpen rose from day to day, Phil Bickford and Alex Vesia had withdrawn the Padres one after the other in sixth and seventh places. But Corey Knebel gave Jurickson Profar a double home run in eighth place. Blake Treinen, told to put out the fire, added kindling and walked Fernando Tatis Jr. and Machado before knocking out Jake Cronenworth to end the inning.

Kenley Jansen tackled the ninth, but not before giving up Wil Myers a two-out single and leaving Profar to end an 11-pitch fight and get the tie run on the record. Jansen stranded both of them by hitting Adam Frazier to end the game.
