LOS ANGELES – When amusement parks reopened in California, the Dodgers were already riding their own roller coaster.

The same team that started the season 13-2 (clack, clack, clack), then went 5-15 (whoosh), followed by a 12-1 hairpin (aaaaaah), have now lost five of the last seven (whoa).

The Dodgers were out for six innings Tuesday night and were choked by leather, the St. Louis Cardinals defense proving the difference with a 3-2 win at Dodger Stadium.

This latest loss is the Dodgers’ 13th to be decided by a run. No team in the majors has so many defeats in one run this season. The Dodgers are 7-13 (.350) if the game is decided by a run, 25-9 (.735) if another number decides.

« You know – I don’t know, » said Roberts when asked if this statistic had any meaning. “Of course this means that we are in a lot of our games and the win-loss-loss can be very different. I haven’t really analyzed every game because I think every game is different and we’ve found ways to lose those games that I think are different in different ways. I think I’ll just draw from the fact that we essentially have a chance to win every night.  »

Analysis will tell you that the win-loss record in single-pass games doesn’t predict a team’s fate within a season – that good luck (good or bad) makes too much noise to indicate anything in particular.

« I think that’s a little. But you have to take your own breaks and … when we look back on those games, those 20 games, whatever it is, we could have done some other things that would probably have outdone us and won those games, « said Roberts. « So often you make your own luck. »

« It was remarkable, » said Roberts. “I thought the linescore didn’t really tell the story, like our offensive, the at-bats we took.

“I don’t really know how well they defend all season. But tonight there was a difference.  »

A jagged start to their « bullpen game » by opener David Price let the Dodgers play from behind from the start.

Price allowed three consecutive hits to start the game, including an RBI double from longtime Dodger nemesis Paul Goldschmidt. Price retired only five of the 11 thugs he faced but was able to avoid any big punches and allowed a second run on Dylan Carlson’s RBI single in the second run.

The Cardinals defense turned two doubles behind their starter John Gant and it was still 2-0 when the Dodgers really started to feel the glove.

Mookie Betts led sixth place with an individual, lighting the fuse for a possible rally. Second baseman Tommy Edman started wiping him out as he jumped high to overtake Max Muncy’s 103.5 mph bid for a base hit.

That spawned Justin Turner, who took a 1-and-1 change off the plate – that home plate referee Hunter Wendelstedt called a strike. Now with 1 and 2 down, Turner picked up a fastball he thought was low. Wendelstedt did not agree again and knocked out Turner with a called third blow.

With two outs, Betts sparked a spark. But Will Smith drove a ball into the left deck of the field. It hit the stands for a double – but the Principle stopped Betts in third place, robbing the Dodgers of a run.

« Yeah, I mean, Mookie – he scores nine out of ten, » said Smith. “It just jumped over the fence. That was a disappointment.  »

Gavin Lux followed with a broken torch that seemed ready to parachute into the flat midfield for a game-defining two-run individual. But Carlson stormed in and made a sliding catch, grabbing the ball just before he could touch the grass.

Gant finished this piece and Geovany Gallegos replaced it in the seventh. Matt Beaty had dropped a flyball due to a two base error in the upper part of the inning. But he made up for it with a double home run against Gallegos to level the score.

« I have to play this 100 percent, » said Beaty of his mistake. « Of course, such a big hit felt really good, especially after such a moment. »

Unavailable Monday due to physical problem Roberts remained a mystery by refusing to provide details. Treinen came for the eighth inning and withdrew the team in turn.

« Since Blake was just resting and it was just an efficient inning to go back out the one before … against that part of the lineup, I felt really good about it, » said Roberts.

Edmundo Sosa fouled a Bunt attempt, brought the infield into play, then faked another Bunt before slitting a floor ball through the left side, just out of reach of Turner as he dived to the left. O’Neill scored the starting shot – and then saved the game in the lower round of 16.

After Yoshi Tsutsugo left and Cody Bellinger cracked a single through the middle, the Dodgers had two ons with two outs for Betts. He hooked a drive into the left corner of the field – only to see O’Neill pull it down the wall to end the game.

« The last ball O’Neil made – the game is over, we win the game, » said Roberts.
