A desert planet thousands of years into the future. A mysterious mind-altering spice. Space witches and human computers. Big houses fight for political power in a big intergalactic empire. The world of « Dune » is … a lot. The novel, written by Frank Herbert in 1965, is hailed as a science fiction masterpiece. So how does the new film portray this fascinating and extraordinary universe?
A film version of « Dune » is a monumental project. As much as fans of the 1985 novel and film would love to keep the story, including myself, there’s no denying that director Denis Villeneuve made it through. Villeneuve was without a doubt the right person to take on Herbert’s classic science fiction creation.
The entangled politics and spacey economic system can be overwhelming when you’re new to the world of Dune. One piece of advice if you haven’t read the novel yet: do yourself a favor and browse the Wikipedia page before you see the film. Trust me. You’ll be grateful to have some background knowledge.
« Dune » (2021) masterfully tweaked the plot just enough to make the story palatable while still respecting Herbert’s original vision. Some changes, like the gender equitable Dr. Liet Kynes, worked well in adapting the novel to the big screen and the modern viewer. One of the best dynamics of both the book and the film is the portrayal of women in an extremely patriarchal society. The strong emphasis on male ancestry and domination within the royal family is in sharp contrast to the equitable society of the Fremen, the indigenous people of Arrakis. Male leadership seems trivial compared to the sheer power of the Bene Gesserit. The Bene Gesserit, a class of highly qualified women with psychic powers, are the real leaders. There really was no better actress than Rebecca Ferguson, who embodied Lady Jessica’s balance between Bene Gesserit strength, maternal instinct, and behind-the-scenes leadership. Their portrayal was flawless.
It’s obvious how much work and care the entire cast has put into perfecting their characters. Timothée Chalamet was a good choice to play Paul Atreides. He took Paul’s character development from childish defiance to … well, you will see. But Chalamets Paul was almost too personable. It would have been nice to emphasize Herbert’s original vision of « Dune »: a critique of white Saviorism and colonialism. Paul is the center of criticism, and he is not meant to be a character that the viewer necessarily takes root for. Chalamet’s interpretation of Paul was good, given the script and instructions given to him.
One of the most memorable casting decisions was Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho. Duncan has a much stronger role in the film than the book, but I preferred that change. Duncan is a brother figure to Paul, and he’s more of a family figure than Paul’s actual family. The two have an interesting dynamic that the audience will appreciate. One character who deserves more screen time was Stephen McKinley Henderson’s Thufir Hawat. Thufir is such an important character and he certainly needed more attention.
If I talked about all the things I love about this movie, this article would never end. To save you reading, here are the top three. First the sandworms. The film managed to show the critical importance of the sandworms to the Fremen and Arrakis while they still remain something of a mystery. Hiding them from the viewer for most of the film captured the mystery, awe, and power of the creatures. Second, the lack of sophisticated technology was the film’s best book-keeping element as computers were banned from the known universe after a deadly war with human-like robots. Humans themselves became computers and technologies. The lack of technology is an important factor and it highlights human hyperintelligence very well. Finally the soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. Zimmer isn’t Toto who wrote the music for « Dune » (1984), but his soundtrack is phenomenal and epic nonetheless.
There are a few things that « Dune » (2021) was sorely lacking. Most of all color! Villeneuve is known for its muted and monochrome color palettes, but that just didn’t work in « Dune ». More color would have made the film more exciting and would only have contributed to the beautiful and captivating camera work. Arrakis is a desert planet that has never seen a drop of rain. Understandably, there isn’t a lot of color to add landscaping, but this should have been the time for the costume and makeup department to shine. Unfortunately, they didn’t make it onto the plate. The stunning costumes are without a doubt the best part of David Lynch’s « Dune » (1984). I looked forward to the character wardrobes in Villeneuve’s adaptation, but I was disappointed. « Dune » would have been the perfect opportunity to create futuristic, creative and lively designs that give the film the necessary splash of color. Instead, the audience was left with less “fashion forward” and more a combination of Spirit Halloween and Old Navy. The costumes were incomparably better in Lynch’s version, but « Dune » (2021) did something pretty interesting with the costumes. The clothing of the Bene Gesserit and the members of the Spacing Guild is reminiscent of Eastern Orthodoxy and Catholicism. The locals of Arrakis are clearly dressed in the Islamic fashion of the Middle East and North Africa. The wardrobes reflect the many religious themes within the plot. In the world of « Dune » knowledge is power and is revered as a religious expression. The symbolism of the costumes was appreciated, but overall made people want more.
As visually powerful as the film was, « Dune » unfortunately missed the point of the story. In the book, Paul is not a hero or protagonist. He’s an opportunist. The film does not correspond to the original intention of the book. Given that it’s not easy to get the nuances of the book out on film, « Dune » lacks the dimension of Herbert’s satire on colonialism.
« Dune » has a beautifully complex and incredible universe, and it becomes criminal underrated. After this movie, which is already proving to be a hit, hopefully “Dune” will get the recognition it deserves. Granted, I was skeptical when I went into the movie thinking the plot was too much to fit into a movie. A Game of Thrones-style series would fit better than a film franchise, but the film was masterfully staged nonetheless. Villeneuve definitely made the right decision to break the story up into several films. You will not hear any complaints from me. The more Villeneuve “Dune” films, the better. « Dune » deserves what other sci-fi and fantasy hits like « Star Wars » have. Hopefully this film version of the cult classic Herbert’s Incredible World will give the widespread recognition and recognition it deserves. All in all, « Dune » (2021) is a visually stunning film and an instant classic. It deserves a top spot on every « must-see » list.
