A little more than a decade has passed since Egypt was last crowned African champion, but Carlos Queiroz’s pharaohs are among the favorites in this edition of the Africa Cup of Nations to take the trophy along with Senegal, Algeria and the To get Ivory Coast. Egypt will start the tournament in Group D along with Sudan, Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria, and their campaign will begin on Tuesday in Garoua, where they will face the Super Eagles – arguably the toughest test of the group stage. Securing the top spot in the group, however, will likely be a battle between the two nations. The champions and runners-up in each of the six groups will reach the last 16.

Queiroz has added six players from foreign clubs to its squad for the tournament. Liverpool will miss their top scorer Mohamed Salah for the next few weeks and hope he returns safe and sound. Unfortunately, Egypt has not escaped the rampant global increase in positive Covid cases – reserve goalkeeper Gabaski and goalkeeping coach Essam al-Hadary have also sent back positive tests, as have two players on the reserve list: striker Marwan Hamdi and winger Ibrahim Adel, both from the B. -List have fallen. Enppi left-back Marwan Daoud, who made his senior team debut at the Arab Cup last month, was drafted as a last-minute replacement for Hamdi.

Aston Villa midfielder Mahmoud Trezeguet was called back after a break on the sideline. In April last year he had to undergo an operation because of a torn cruciate ligament and missed six World Cup qualifiers in 2022, the friendly against Liberia in September and the Arab Cup. His last appearance was in the 4-0 win against the Comoros in the AFCON qualification in March 2021.

Queiroz also has two rising stars – Galatasaray striker Mostafa Mohamed and Stuttgart midfielder Omar Marmoush, both of whom are Egypt Have represented youth and will strive to gain experience at a major tournament.

This time there was no room for Al-Ahly winger Mohamed Magdy Afsha or the experienced midfielder Tarek Hamed. Egypt’s campaign against Nigeria begins on Tuesday January 11th.
