CM – Environmental associations respond to government subsidies for renewable energies

Two of Australia’s leading environmental groups have issued statements sharing their joy at the Queensland government’s recent allocation of funds.

The state government will invest $ 2 billion in renewable energy and hydrogen jobs as part of its COVID-19 economic recovery plan.

The $ 2 billion investment will be cheaper, deliver cleaner energy to support more jobs and more industries in Queensland.

Prime Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk said the $ 2 billion Queensland Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund announcement was a turning point in the economy Queensland development.

« Queensland is better positioned than any other place in Australia to benefit from the jobs and industries that are emerging from this cheaper, cleaner energy, » she said The billion dollar Queensland Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund is about more jobs and more industries.

« It will also continue to develop the resource Support the Queensland sector while helping to achieve our goal of 50 percent renewable energy by 2030. «

Australian Conservation Foundation climate activist Jason Lyddieth said the investment was a significant investment in moving away from coal.

« For Queensland, it makes sense to use our abundant solar and wind resources to supply our own state and drive new export industries such as green steel, green aluminum and hydrogen.

» Queensland is already going strong Climate change affected as higher temperatures damage the Great Barrier Reef and make once wet rainforests vulnerable to bushfires.

« Climate change is a real and serious threat to our way of life, so Queensland – in addition to increasing renewable energy capacities – Get out of coal and gas.

« We need a plan to take care of the workers, communities and families who will be hardest hit by the inevitable fossil fuel shift. »

Lyddieth said, that Queensland’s 2030 targets of reducing emissions by 30 percent and getting 50 percent of electricity from renewable sources should be much stronger.

« Earlier this week, the state government put a pumped hydropower plant at Borumba Dam into the planning phase and secured land for a 3 GW hydrogen electrolyser facility near Gladstone, » he said.

« A report published last year showed how Gladstone can build on its success as an industrial and export hub to become a renewable energy hub for industries such as aluminum, steel, cement and hydrogen. »

Dave Copeman, director of the Queensland Conservation Council, said the announcement will be cash in the pockets for Queenslanders over the next decade.

« This public investment in storage will enable cheaper, cleaner renewable energy, » said Copeman .

“It will make the grid safer and help smooth out the evening spikes in wholesale electricity prices.

“The state government has already led Queensland through a period of rapid growth in renewable energy.

“In 2020, renewable energy, including solar power on the roof, covered around 20 percent of Queensland’s needs.

“We still have a long way to go before we reach the Queensland Renewable Energy Target of 50 percent by 2030.

« More importantly, we still have a long way to go to reduce Queensland’s emissions as quickly as necessary to keep the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees. »
