MADRID: Luis Enrique has said it will be for Spain will give « no excuses » at Euro 2020, although positive Covid-19 tests ruin their preparations for Group E’s opening game against Sweden on Monday.

Spain captain Sergio Busquets is still in self-isolation at home while Defender Diego Llorente was only allowed to return to the group on Saturday after a fourth negative test in a row.

Luis Enrique’s training schedule was mixed up last week, the squad trained individually and the last friendly against Lithuania went to the U21s.

The team got back together on Saturday at their training base in Las Rozas in Madrid and on Sunday at La Cartuja stadium in Seville, where they start against Sweden.

« About a year ago I played the game talked to them and told them that we would have a very clear idea of how they should play, « said Luis Enrique in a press conference on Sunday.

» We had to change a little, we don’t have our captain here, Busquets, and we would have loved to have him, but we’re adapting.

« It’s been a tough week without a doubt, but no complaints, no excuses. We have a great squad and we’re looking forward to the first game tomorrow. «

The Spanish squad were vaccinated by the Spanish army in Madrid on Friday and Jordi Alba dispelled fears that the players might experience side effects before or during the game.

« We are all perfect, » said Alba on Sunday. « Everything is good, luckily. We’re in good spirits. «

Alba, who will step in as the captain for Busquets, admitted that the one-on-one training was » more boring « but insisted that » the players know what the boss wants from us  » .

Conditions could be unforgiving for anyone feeling below average as temperatures in Seville could reach 30 degrees Celsius on Monday night.

But Spain’s players will be used to the heat and Luis Enrique tuned the final sessions in Madrid to the hottest time of the day to make sure they were prepared. « The heat is a factor, but it was very hot in Madrid, » said Luis Enrique. « It is not incredibly hot here, so I think we should be able to play at a decent pace. «
