CM – Evidence that masks lower Covid-19 death rates

Research was conducted to measure the impact of face mask legislation on Covid-19 deaths. The study spanned 44 countries worldwide and showed that the death rate growth was significantly slower when mask-wearing regulations were enforced.

The study included 27 states with laws and 17 states without laws, totaling nearly a billion people included; it took place between mid-February and the end of May last year.

There were well over 2 million fatalities among all participants in the study. Over 1,200,000 of these came from countries without mask laws (almost 60%) and just over 900,000 from countries with mask laws. In countries with rules, the average death rate per million people was less than 50, compared to nearly 290 for those without.

When the virus began to spread, those without mask restrictions actually had a lower death rate. This didn’t last long, however, as deaths escalated to the point where they exceeded countries that enforced laws.

Research concluded that face masks are still a protective strategy against the spread of Covid 19, even if everyone had the opportunity to get a full vaccination.

The lead researcher, Sahar Motallebi, stated that “few studies have focused on whether wearing masks can reduce deaths from COVID-19 and had no study examined the data in several countries. The large sample of culturally diverse countries in this retrospective study includes a large « population, which gives us more evidence of the life-saving potential of masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. » does not necessarily reduce morbidity, and face masks continue to protect against both.
