Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Wednesday that the outgoing government’s experience of dealing with world powers including the United States showed that « trusting the West doesn’t work ».
President Hassan Rouhani’s diplomatic achievement, a 2015 nuclear deal with the great powers, gave Iran some relief in return for restrictions on its nuclear program of international sanctions.
But it was torpedoed in 2018 by then US President Donald Trump, who unilaterally withdrew from the agreement and again imposed penal sanctions.
« Future generations should take advantage of this experience. During this administration it became clear made that it doesn’t work to trust the West, « said Khamenei to the outgoing President ducks Hassan Rouhani and members of his cabinet.
Rouhani’s government has been in talks with the great powers since April to bring Washington back into the deal, but an agreement now seems unlikely until next month he hands over President-elect Ebrahim Raisi.
Khamenei said Washington made its return to the 2015 agreement conditional on « including a sentence that (says) talking about some issues in the future or we won’t reach an agreement ».

One of the main criticisms of the 2015 agreement brought forward by Trump was the failure of the Iranian missile program or address its alleged interference in regional affairs.
However, Tehran has always refused to include non-nuclear issues in the deal officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
Khamenei also criticized the US for refusing to « guarantee that (they) will not violate the agreement in the future » by unilaterally opting out, as Trump did 2018 did.
« Whenever you’ve postponed problems with deals with the West or negotiations with the West and America and the like, you got stuck and got stuck, » he told the Rouhani administration.
Trump’s successor Joe Biden has signaled his willingness to return to the nuclear deal and has entered into indirect negotiations with Iran in addition to formal talks with the remaining parties to the deal, the UK, China, France, Germany and Russia.
Rouhani’s successor, Raisi, is ultra-conservative, But has spoken out in favor of the nuclear talks and argued that Iran needs an end to the US sanctions.
