CM – « Failed stunt »: Opposition rejects 4-party meetings to end the dead end of parliament

The government’s efforts to initiate back-channel talks to resolve the lingering impasse in parliament could hit a wall, messages from Congress leaders and Trinamool Congress suggest. The opposition, they have made it clear, stand together and have no intention of deviating from their call for the suspension of 12 MPs punished for « unruly behavior » to be lifted.

Sources said Friday, the chairman of Rajya Sabha, Venkaiah Naidu, had asked the opposition and the government to meet on the issue and reach an understanding on the issue that has been hampering the winter meeting since the beginning of November 29th. Tonight an invitation for talks was sent to four parties whose MLAs have been suspended from Prahlad Joshi, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs.

But the way became clear when the opposition leader in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge wrote to Mr Joshi and described his invitation to only four opposition parties as « unfair and unhappy ».

« All opposition parties are united in protest against the suspension of the 12 MPs. On the evening of November 29th, we ourselves demanded that either the chairman of the Raiya Sabha or the chairman of the House of Representatives Shri Piyush Goyal call the leaders of all opposition parties for a discussion in order to break the stalemate. This sensible request from us to continue to invite leaders from four opposition parties instead of inviting leaders from all opposition parties is unfair and unfortunate, « wrote the senior congressional chairman.

Monday morning STUNT from a government that does not want that #Parliament works. The government calls on the leaders of the 4 OpPN parties, whose 12 RS MPs have been arbitrarily suspended. The government leaves another 10 OpPN parties outside

The leader of Rajya Sabha previously had the need to run smoothly of the House of Representatives and asked the House of Representatives and the opposition leader to discuss the matter.

The government had accepted the opposition’s point of view that the unruly behavior of MPs took place in the last session, meaning that they were in this session according to the Rajya Sabha rules not susp can be ended.

« They (of course) want the suspended members to apologize to the House one by one, but they will not do any of that, » said Kharge.

The impasse has hit the functionality of both Houses. In the third week of the winter session, the productivity of Rajya Sabha hit a low of 37.60 percent – which reduced the functionality of the house to 46.70 percent in the first three weeks.

The tweet from Mr. O’Brien has also shown that, despite growing differences, Trinamool is ready to work with Congress on this issue.

Last week, the party’s absence was noted at the opposition strategy meeting convened by Sonia Gandhi to move the matter forward. In addition to the Congress, five opposition parties took part in the meeting – the Nationalist Congress Party of Sharad Pawar, the DMK, the Shiv Sena, the CPM and the National Conference.

Among the suspended are six members of the Congress, two each from Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena as well as two from the left-wing parties – one each from CPI and CPM.
