New Delhi: Filmmaker Luv Rajan, known for films like Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and Pyaar Ka Puchnama, has announced a biopic about cricketer Sourav Ganguly, details of which will be announced later.
The love of Indian cinema for sports biopics is of course evident in the number of films planned for the next few months. Ranveer Singh will essay the role of cricketer Kapil Dev in ’83 directed by Kabir Khan, while Maidaan with Ajay Devgn as real soccer coach Syed Abdul Rahim is slated for mid-October.
Taapsee Pannu is also preparing to play Mithali Raj in a movie soon. More recently, the Hindi film industry has also turned to the specific genre of women’s and sports films in an effort to excite cinema audiences as real life stories emerge and female-led cinema is gaining more popularity at the box office. In March of this year, T-Series released Saina, based on the life of badminton player Saina Nehwal, starring Parineeti Chopra.
Media experts say that since filmmaking is a business and sports films are attractive, the narrative needs to be tied to something that is commercially successful.
“So when you choose people to talk about, it has to be topics that click and whose lives have already found a certain currency. And exercise is one such topic that interests people, « said Prasoon Joshi, author of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehras Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, a biopic by Milkha Singh, in an earlier interview with Mint.
Creating a sports biopic has several advantages. For the audience, they offer the appeal of film stars slip into the roles of well-known sports personalities, to push themselves out of traditional comfort zones and to seek critical recognition. Additionally, these films offer special marketing opportunities that enable multiple corporate partnerships and resonate with people as it is a story of human triumph.
