CM – Football: Depay-Treble sends Dutch leaders in the World Cup qualifying group




AMSTERDAM: Memphis Depay scored a hat trick when the Netherlands beat 10-man Turkey 6-1 in the Amsterdam Arena on Tuesday and led the World Cup qualifying group G.

It was the first international triple for the 27-year-old striker as the Dutch took a strong win for the second time in four days, scooping 13 points from six games and replacing Turkey at the top of the group.

Davy Klaassen scored in the first minute A dream start for the home side, who lost 4-2 to Turkey against Turkey at the start of qualifying for the Qatar finals in March 2022 before Depay added three more, including a penalty.

Guus Til scored 10 Fifth goal with minutes remaining and Donyell Malen added a sixth goal in stoppage time before Cengiz Under scored a consolation goal.

Turkey slipped from first to third in the group as they had 11 points n stayed while Norway finished second behind the Dutch after beating Gibraltar 5-1 on Tuesday.

The Netherlands picked up where they left off after a clear 4-0 win over Montenegro on Saturday to take the lead when Klaassen and Depay scored almost straight away.

An aggressive Dutch approach led Klaassen to assist for Depay’s first goal in the 17th minute when she scored the result doubled and it was 3-0 at halftime after Depay converted a penalty in the 38th minute.

Caglar Soyuncu was cautioned for a foul on Klaassen to receive the penalty awarded after a VAR check. The Turkish defender was then sent off for a second warning just before half-time.

Depay completed his hat-trick with a header on the goal line to hit Steven Berghuis’s cross in the 54th minute before Til and Malen sealed the win with two more goals.

The only blemish was a bad pass from goalkeeper Justin Bijlow, which allowed Under to score for Turkey with the final kick of the game.

It was a triumphant night for experienced coach Louis van Gaal at the beginning of his third term as coach. He only had a few days to prepare the team for the draw in Norway last Wednesday, but has since recorded two emphatic wins and a clear path to automatic qualification.
