The Detroit Pistons traded him to the Cleveland Cavaliers for pennies on the dollar (Brandon Knight, John Henson and a 2023 second-round pick) to avoid giving him his $ 28.7 million player option had to pay out for 2020-21.

In February, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Brian Windhorst reported that the Cavs had cast the two-time All-Star with the aim of extraditing him before the trading deadline. No deal was made and Cleveland had to put up almost all of his salary to buy it. He then signed with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The deal for Andre Drummond in Los Angeles is the amount – $ 794,536 – that he returned on his buyout with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Lakers will have a cap hit of $ 554,988.

The Lakers are $ 954,349 under the hard cap and have enough room to sign a 15th player.

Drummond remains a prolific center. He averaged 17.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in 25 games with the Cavaliers before scoring 11.9 points and 10.2 boards in 21 appearances with the Lakers. Between the two stops, he also shot 49.3 percent and an average of 1.1 blocks.

Drummond only got eight threes last season and missed all of them. According to NBA.com, 517 of his 552 field goal attempts came within 3 feet of the basket.

Despite his 6’10 « , 279-pound body, he is also not a dominant defender. Opposing players shot, according to the NBA .com 51.7% off the field if they went up against him.

While some centers have successfully adapted their games to strategic trends, Drummond seems unable to.

Chris Herring from Sports Illustrated also looked at how his rebounding, one of his best skills, doesn’t lead to much success. Teams are more focused on putting players back on the defensive rather than smashing the glass, and larger centers find less rebound. Possibilities with a higher volume of three-pointers:

« And even when clubs fight for offensive rebounds, the misfires are more likely to rebound towards the perimeter than in earlier epochs due to the longer shots. This means that rebounders need more range. “Maybe 10 or 12 years ago, you only see a few guys who go for [offensive boards]. Now you see Perimeter guys with that freedom, « says Steve Clifford, who coaches the Magic. » With all the long rebounds now there is a bigger area on the defensive. « You have to pursue to end possessions. ‘ » </ Philadelphia 76ers head coach Doc Rivers, who played from 1983 to 1996, told Herring that Drummond "would have fit right into this generation of the game," suggesting he is somewhat out of date.

Utah Jazz presented Rudy Gobert with a five-year extension of $ 205 million, although he turned to a more traditional middle form. Unlike Drummond, however, the Frenchman is an elite defender who thrives on pick and roll.

All of which means that Drummond will inevitably drop his next deal from the five-year deal he received from the Pistons would. And that’s before considering the ongoing financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

To some extent, his previous contract may have steered the discourse about his game so far that he veiled how he did can help a team. While the 2012 first-round pick isn’t a top notch center, it’s not entirely worthless.

The fact that Drummond is going to Philadelphia, where he will likely support Embiid, is a sign of how far his stocks have fallen.
