The waves of Max Verstappen’s crash in the previous race continued on Sunday morning when Honda tweeted that they’d replaced the engine of the championship leader’s Red Bull at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Verstappen was kicked out of the British Grand Prix on July 18 after a first lap collision with Lewis Hamilton, who won the race.
The bad feeling continued on Saturday when Mercedes took third place on the Hungaroring with Verstappen. After the session, Honda checked the Power Unit (PU).
« During the post-qualifying checks, we noticed something about Max’s PU that may have developed over the weekend, probably an aftermath of the Silverstone crash », wrote Honda Racing F1 on Twitter.
« We have therefore changed it to a new PU with the same specification. According to the regulations, Max can start from his third place on the grid with no penalty. » it closed.
In Hungary, Red Bull started the weekend with the same engine. After training on Friday, Honda announced that the PU was working « normally ».
The weekend was already dominated by the ongoing battle of words between Red Bull, who insist that Hamilton was underpunished for the Silverstone incident, and Mercedes.
The win at Silverstone enabled reigning champion Hamilton to to reduce Verstappen’s lead in the table to eight points.

Shouted at by more than 140,000 spectators, Hamilton tried on the first lap to overtake Verstappen in the Copse corner instead of throwing the Red Bull off the track into the barrier.
Before that, the 23-year-old Verstappen said he was unhappy with Hamilton despite having cleared the air with the Briton during a phone call after their spectacular accident.
